Vidya Balan, known for her elegant choices in sarees, recently promoted a shift in attitude towards the timeless garment. Speaking at a handloom conference in Bengaluru, she challenged the stereotype that sarees are exclusively meant for older generations. Vidya highlighted the importance of embracing handloom fabrics as contemporary and empowering fashion statements.

Encouraging individuals to break away from traditional norms, the actor expressed, “I always tell people that there is no one way to wear a saree; style it as you please. It is a versatile attire suitable for any occasion.” Emphasizing the significance of appreciating the diverse weaves of the country, Vidya stressed the need to take pride in our handloom heritage.

She further emphasized the importance of embracing our cultural roots by proudly wearing sarees and advocating for sustainability. Vidya urged individuals to preserve family heirlooms, as well as promote the reusability of outfits to contribute towards sustainability. By increasing the demand for sarees, we can support and sustain the livelihoods of traditional weavers.The handloom sector in Karnataka has an annual value of ₹1,000 crore. The state is home to 120,000 skilled weavers distributed across four major handloom clusters. Karnataka contributes over 45% of the Mulberry Silk production in India.
